The Maerdy Football team entered the Urdd Football tournament competing against teams from all across RCT. The boys played extremely well, reaching the semi finals and only conceded one goal in the whole tournament in a closely fought game against Treorchy. Well done to all who took part.

Digital Leader Training

Pupils from Year 4 and Year 5 took the opportunity to attend a Digital Leader workshop held at Darran Park Primary School, on Wednesday 10th February. The workshop helped the pupils gain more experience and develop already good ICT skills, which they can use and show to other pupils in their roles as Digital Leaders at Maerdy Community Primary School. The pupils were joined by other Digital Leaders from other schools where they shared ideas and made good links for future collaboration. Well done to all those involved!

On February 8th 12 pupils from Year 5 completed in an Athletics Festival at Abercynon Leisure Centre. Everyone performed superbly and were a credit to the school winning many gold awards in the process. A special mention goes to Kacey Davies who stepped into the team at the last minute on the morning of the event and did herself proud. See below for pictures and a video of the team winning a Gold award for first place in the sprint relay!

Well done to Cody Jenkins on completing the Cumbria Intervention and making fantastic progress. Da iawn Cody!

Treorchy Male Voice Choir

On Thursday 28th January we welcomed three members of Treorchy Male Voice Choir to the school for the annual Junior Musician of the Year competition. The quality of the singing, performing and piano playing was excellent and all three judges were impressed with the talent on show. All performers received certificates for their performances and five pupils were lucky enough to be chosen for the upcoming semi-finals. Congratulations to Ieuan Chambers and Gethin Chambers who qualified in instrumental category and Regan Davies, Hannah Thomas and Gracie Richards who qualified in the singing category.

Maerdy Primary School entered the New Directions Cardiff City football tournament on January 7th at Cardiff International Sports Stadium. Competing against teams from all across South Wales Maerdy’s young side played superbly; qualifying from a tough group of eight teams by finishing in the top two – winning six out of seven games in the process. Ultimately the boys lost to two late goals in the final game against an excellent side from Canton, featuring several Cardiff City academy players which meant falling one step short of qualifying for the Welsh Finals. Well done to all the players on an excellent performance.
